How to Set Up Google Ads Reporting

June 10, 20242 min read

Google Ad reporting offers real-time insights and analysis for your digital ad campaigns. Follow these essential setup guidelines to ensure accurate Google Ad Reporting.

Step 1: Choose the Correct Google Ad Account in Integrations

Ensure the connected Google account has maximum permissions, such as an administrator or Google ad account manager access.

Step 2: Select the Correct MCC Account ID and Client Account ID

  • MCC Account: Stands for My Client Centre, also known as Google Ads Manager Account, which manages multiple clients' Google Ad accounts.

  • MCC ID: Located in the top right corner.

  • Client Account ID: Found by clicking the help section.

Step 3: Add the UTM Template to the Google Ad Account

UTM tracking templates can be added at different levels:

  • Account Settings: Recommended.

  • Campaign Settings

  • Ad Group Level

UTM Tracking Template

Copy this template:

{lpurl}?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium={adname}&utm_campaign={campaignname}&utm_content={adgroupname}&utm_keyword={keyword}&utm_matchtype={matchtype}&campaign_id={campaignid}&ad_group_id={adgroupid}&ad_id={creative}

How It Works

  • ValueTrack Parameter: Must include a parameter like {lpurl} to insert your final URL.

  • Multiple Parameters: Append them using an ampersand (&).

Set up or edit tracking templates at the campaign, ad group, or ads and extension level. Follow detailed instructions in the linked article.

Example

  • Final URL: http://example.com

  • Tracking Template: {lpurl}?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium={adname}&utm_campaign={campaignname}&utm_content={adgroupname}&utm_keyword={keyword}&utm_matchtype={matchtype}&campaign_id={campaignid}&ad_group_id={adgroupid}&ad_id={creative}

  • Landing Page URL After Clicking Ads:

  • {lpurl}?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=black_friday&utm_campaign=blackday10&utm_content=marketingbanner&utm_keyword=getdiscounteddeal&utm_matchtype=e&campaign_id=12345&ad_group_id=2394984903&ad_id=93844980940&gclid=84843ewhfb834nedhj4u49

Go to your Google Ads Account > Account Settings > Tracking. Paste the tracking template URL in the "Tracking template" field.

Important Notes

  • Test the tracking template to ensure most campaigns show the landing page is found. Rectify errors for active campaigns.

  • UTM Source used to be utm_source=google, but it is now deprecated and removed by ad blockers.

Step 4: Adding Script for Precautionary Measures

Set up the Google Ad Precautionary tracking script as a fail-safe if the UTM template fails to capture attribution data. The script will track all clicks on a link and send them to Google Analytics. Ensure the URL in the script matches the one used by your website.

Key Considerations

  1. Campaign names, ads, and ad sets must be unique.

  2. Name parameters should not be changed during the campaign's lifetime. If necessary, create a new campaign/ad set/ad.

  3. Changing the campaign/ad set/ad name without creating a new one will cause CRM data to refer to the original campaign name, affecting reporting.

  4. Use the Objectives dropdown on the top left to define the campaign's objective.
